The lymphatic story

Our lymphatic system is something we don’t think about much. Trust me, after reading this article you will be thinking about it much more and asking us what lymphatic treatments you can have to treat your skin.

Any waste product that is too big for the bloodstream is moved into the interstitial fluid and waits to be absorbed by the lymph then transported to the lymph nodes to be filtered. Our lymph nodes filter and clean the lymph of dead skin cells, bacteria, viruses, cancerous cells, dust, dyes and proteins and clean lymph is then transported back to the heart where it re enters the bloodstream.

The lymphatic system irrigates our tissues, it acts as a sewer system, freeing space for the flow of lymph and eliminating waste produced in our cells. As we age we want to make sure our lymph is working at optimum to keep our cells nourished and pristine throughout our bodies. If we have a blockage or stagnation in our lymph it will cease to flow creating old lymph, without movement, lymph vessels will atrophy and stop working all together. This process will lead to deterioration in the health of the skin, and in turn exacerbate many skin conditions, causing puffiness and inflammation.

So why is lymph so important in terms of our skin? It’s essential to remember that we don’t age on a physical level but on a cellular level. Think of your lymphatic system like a stream, if that stream gets blocked by a log or a whole lot of rubbish, the stream won’t flow and the water becomes murky, dirty, stagnant. So how do we get the water flowing clear again, we clear the stream. Our lymph system is the same, if it  becomes blocked or stagnant with waste, it can’t work properly. Skin will start to look dull, wrinkles appear along with age spots and other issues such as acne, rosacea and other skin conditions can become present or worsen. So how do we get our lymph flowing again? Our lymphatic system has no pump, so just like the stream, we need to remove the blockages manually.

Any type of massage will help to move the lymph, but at Talking Beauty we have a few favourite treatments to really target moving the lymph, clearing blockages and stagnation and getting the oxygen and nutrients back into the blood and in turn to the skin which will appear, bright, fresh, nourished and clear.

Our in house Flow facial is incredible for targeting the lymphatic system and clearing out toxins which may be causing breakout, dull and even inflamed skins. This is a great treatment for quick results in a short time. We may recommend it as a one off or in a series depending on your concerns. You can see the options under lymphatic facial in our skin treatment section.

For a treatment that not only treats the lymphatic flow but is also sculpting and smoothing, relieves muscle tension and restores vibrancy and vitality to the skin, we recommend our Gua Sha fusion facial. There are only a handful of therapists in Victoria that have been trained in this treatment. Luckily for you, Talking Beauty has two of them!!

All facial massage encourages lymphatic flow by stimulating circulation and pushing out what we don’t want. When circulation is improved, lymph flow is enhanced. All Talking Beauty facials incorporate an element of facial massage. You may notice that sometimes movements are different, more gentle, very specific, that's us being amazing and trying to stimulate your lymphatic flow!
