Dehydration

Fact

97% of Australians have dehydrated skin.

Often when we talk dehydration, the first thought that comes to many, is that the skin is dry. But that is not necessarily so. Dehydration can present itself in many different ways.

Do you have breakouts? Does your skin feel rough? Have you noticed your pigmentation worsen? Maybe it feels dry, maybe it feels oily. All of these things can be a sign of dehydration.

 Let's explain

When the skin is dehydrated, our chymotryptic enzymes become inactive. This means that our skins natural exfoliation process stops working. Your skin cells start to build up on the surface and your skin will start to feel rough.

Our cellular communication also fails, this then leads to our sebaceous glands becoming confused and they can start producing more or less oil. This is why we can still be dehydrated and have oily skin or dry skin. Due to the build up of cells, excess oil or not enough oil, our products will become less effective as the skin is unable to absorb things so easily. You are also much more prone to sensitivity.

How to fix it

Your first thought is going to be, I need to drink more water. This is probably true. While we encourage you to keep up your water intake, it's good to know that the water we drink, only amounts to around 13% of the hydration in our skin. Your skin cells not only need water, but oil too. Oil has for so long been given a bad name. If you are prone to oily skin, often you can think that by avoiding oil altogether, it can fix the problem. What if we were to tell you that you would actually benefit to have more oil into your diet. By introducing an EFA ( essential fatty acids) supplement, your cell membranes will become big and juicy, your cellular communication will improve and you will create a strong acid mantle ( top layer of skin). In general, Australians are very deficient in EFAs, which explains why 97% of us are dehydrated. It is very hard to achieve the amounts of lipids our body needs through the food we eat alone. We need these good lipids in our diet to keep the water in.
If you are supplementing internally it is important to remember that you should use good quality EFAs. At Talking Beauty we stock Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omegas which are extremely rich in omega 3 and are absorbed easily by the body.

As well as taking internal EFAs it is essential to apply them topically in your skin care. This helps to support your skin barrier leading to a healthy well moisturised skin that will age more slowly and be less prone to issues. We recommend Kiwi Seed and Linseed serums from Dermaviduals they are extremely rich in omega 3. In fact, they are around 60% omega 3! You can apply these as neat however we recommend a custom blended serum with other skin loving ingredients such as CM Glucan and Hyaluronic acid.
